Hiking trails with kids in Ardales

If you’re looking for a peaceful family getaway surrounded by nature and free from stress, Ardales is a fantastic option. This village in Málaga offers several easy hiking trails that are perfect for spending a day outdoors with children—breathing fresh air, disconnecting from screens, and enjoying simple moments together.

Gaitanejo Trail: Nature by the Reservoir

This is one of the best kid-friendly routes in Ardales. Just minutes from the town center, the Gaitanejo Trail winds through pine trees and shaded areas, offering beautiful views of the Conde de Guadalhorce Reservoir. The route is short, easy, and well-marked—ideal for families with young children.

Along the trail, you can spot birds, small pools of water, and striking rock formations. There are also great spots to rest or have a picnic. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and reconnect—with nature, with family, and with quality time.

How to Get There and Park
You can park at the north entrance to Caminito del Rey. From there, just follow the signs toward the “Sendero Gaitanejo.”
The trailhead is nearby, clearly marked, and easy to find. After the walk, you can also visit the reservoir or nearby picnic areas.

Puente de La Molina – Castillo de Turón Trail: A Walk Through History and Nature

This trail combines nature, history, and stunning views, without being physically demanding. It’s an ideal choice for a calm family walk with a twist: a visit to an ancient hilltop fortress that sparks the imagination of kids.

The trail follows wide paths through native vegetation and open spaces, ending at the ruins of the Castillo de Turón. From the top, you get a panoramic view of Ardales and its surroundings—well worth the climb.

  • Duration: Around 2 hours at a relaxed pace with breaks
  • The terrain is easy and mostly flat

The climb to the castle can be done slowly, and once at the top, there’s space to rest and explore the ruins.

The castle ruins are usually a highlight for children: crumbling towers, old stone walls, and the thrill of being in a place full of stories. It’s a great opportunity to tell tales, spark imagination, or simply enjoy the views together.

In spring or after rains, the area is particularly lush, with flowers, insects, and animal tracks to discover.

There are plenty of places to pause along the way—benches, large rocks under the trees, and small open clearings. Pack a snack or light lunch and enjoy it at one of these peaceful spots overlooking the valley.

After descending from the castle, you can extend the walk around the Puente de La Molina area or head toward the Turón River if the kids are up for more exploring.
